Screen savers all look similar, but they feel quite different in daily use. This short guide helps you pick the right one for your needs.
First, Where Will It Live?
- Your main work machine: go for quiet, low-contrast, unobtrusive styles — like the abstract gradient of Square Clock — easy on the eyes when you step away and not distracting when you return.
- A living-room or showroom big screen: be bolder. The group dance of Clock Clock or the flowing particles of Dot Matrix make great talking points.
- Working across time zones: use World Clock Grid as an always-on wall of world clocks.
- Bedroom / bedside: the retro Flip Clock has large, glanceable digits that are comfortable at night.
A Few Practical Criteria
- Readability: a screen saver is still a clock — the time should be readable at a glance from across the room.
- Energy use: for something that runs for hours, favor energy-optimized implementations that barely redraw when still and reduce frame rate automatically.
- Signed and notarized: for a .saver downloaded online, prefer ones signed and notarized by Apple — they install with a double-click and no security warning. Ours all are.
- Multi-monitor and resolution: good screen savers run independently on each display and stay crisp on 4K.
Style Is Just the Start
Finally, remember a screen saver is really a small thing meant to lift your mood. Minimal, retro, techy, abstract — there's no absolute right or wrong; pick the one that looks good to you. Start from the six styles on our home page — all free.
